What is a Nebulizer (i.e Nebulizer Machine or Nebulizer Compressor) ? or the difference between a
Nebulizer and an Inhaler?
If you have asthma, your doctor may prescribe a nebulizer as
treatment, or breathing therapy. The nebulizer compressor device delivers the
same types of medication as metered-dose inhalers (MDIs), which are the
familiar pocket-sized inhalers, but works differently. Nebulizers may be easier
to use than MDIs, especially for children who aren’t old enough to properly use
inhalers, or adults with severe asthma.
A nebulizer machine turns liquid medicine into a mist to
help treat your asthma. Nebulizer machines come in electric or battery-run
versions. Nebulizer machine also come in a larger size that’s meant to sit on a
table and plug into a wall, and a smaller size you can carry with you. Both are
made up of a base that holds an air compressor, a small container for liquid
medicine, and a tube that connects the air compressor to the medicine
container. Above the medicine container is a mouthpiece or mask you use to
inhale the mist.
How Does a Nebulizer
Work?
Pressurized air passes through the tube and turns the liquid
medicine into a mist. During an asthma attack or an infection, the mist may be
easier to inhale than the spray from a pocket inhaler. When your airways become
narrow — like during an asthma attack — you can’t take deep breaths. For this
reason, a nebulizer is a more effective way to deliver the medication than an
inhaler, which requires you to take a deep breath.
Nebulizers can deliver short-acting or long-acting asthma
medication. Also, more than one medication can be given in the same treatment.
The type of medication and dose will be prescribed by your doctor. You may
receive premixed containers of liquid that can be opened and placed in the
machine, or you may have to mix the solution before each use.
How Do I Use It?
Your doctor will tell you how often to use the nebulizer.
Ask your doctor if they have any specific instructions for your treatment. You
should also read the manual that comes with your machine.
Here are general
instructions on how to use a nebulizer:
- Put the nebulizer compressor on a flat surface where it can safely reach an outlet.
- Check to make sure all the pieces are clean.
- Wash your hands before prepping the medication.
- If your medication is premixed place it in the container. If you need to mix it, measure the correct amount and then place it in the container.
- Connect the tube to the compressor and the liquid container.
- Attach the nebulizer mouthpiece or nebulizer mask.
- Turn on the switch and check to see that the nebulizer is misting.
- Put the nebulizer mouthpiece in your mouth and close your mouth around it or put the nebulizer mask securely over your nose and mouth, leaving no gaps.
- Slowly breath in and out until the medicine is gone. This may take five to 15 minutes.
- Keep the liquid container upright throughout the treatment.
How Do I Clean and
Care for It?
The nebulizer should be cleaned after each use and
disinfected after every other treatment. Since you are breathing the vapor from
the machine, it must be clean. If the nebulizer machine is not cleaned
correctly, bacteria could grow inside it. Follow your healthcare provider’s
directions for cleaning and disinfecting, to make sure that you’re not
breathing harmful bacteria.
The nebulizer tubing should be replaced regularly, since it
is not possible to completely clean the inside of the nebulizer tubing. Your
provider should explain how often to change the tubing.
Daily cleaning:
- Take off the nebulizer mouthpiece/ nebulizer mask and remove the medicine container and wash with hot water and mild liquid dish soap.
- Shake off the extra water.
- Reconnect the medicine container and nebulizer mouthpiece/ nebulizer mask to the nebulizer compressor and turn on the device to air dry the pieces.
Disinfecting:
- Take off the detachable parts (nebulizer mouthpiece and nebulizer medicine container).
- Soak them in the solution provided by your doctor or one part white vinegar and three parts hot water.
- Let soak for one hour or as long as listed on the instructions.
- Remove the pieces and either let them air dry or reconnect the machine to dry them.
- Check with your healthcare provider or pharmacist to make sure that you have the correct instructions for daily cleaning and disinfecting your nebulizer.
What Else Should I
Know?
Discuss an asthma treatment plan with your doctor.
Nebulizers are an effective treatment for asthma, but the machines are noisy,
usually require a power source, and the treatment takes longer. If you get
relief from a pump inhaler, your doctor may prescribe a nebulizer for use only
when the pump isn’t working for you. Having a nebulizer on hand can be a good
backup plan to avoid emergency room visits.
Note: You would need to have a Prescription for purchasing an adult
nebulizer machine or a pediatric nebulizer machine. You wouldn’t be needing a
prescription if you are only buying nebulizer tubing or nebulizer mask or
nebulizer filters.

Choosing the Right
Nebulizer for You
When searching for a nebulizer system or any nebulizer products,
it is important to understand the function of a nebulizer system and the
benefits of nebulizer use, which we have already discussed.
It is estimated that 50% of people who use an inhaler do so
without receiving the intended amount of medicine to their lungs. Due to the
difficulty of using an MDI effectively, or upon a doctor’s recommendation, many
people decide to use a nebulizer system, especially for children or older
adults.
If you’ve decided that using a nebulizer for respiratory
treatment is right for you or a loved one then you’ll probably want some
guidance in finding the right one. There are several different nebulizer
systems on the market today but all of them fall within a few basic categories
with distinctive features.
Basic Categories
1. Tabletop Nebulizer Systems:
- Designed to be used indoors and be placed on a sturdy and still surface
- Generally are less expensive than handheld nebulizer systems and come with a longer warranty
- May be more suitable for small children or infants who require stationery use
- Grant the user more mobility during treatment times because the system operates while being held
- Normally are more compatible with power sources other than AC cords (like a 12V DC auto adapter or a battery
- Usually smaller and lighter than tabletop nebulizer systems
Note: Among handheld and tabletop nebulizer systems there are two
distinctly different methods of nebulization, or ways in which the liquid
medication is converted into an aerosol mist.
Types of Systems
1. Piston-Pump Compressor (also called Jet or
Aerosol Nebulizers):
- Delivers air from a piston-powered compressor through the liquid medication (normally through use of tubing and nebulizer cup) which creates the breathable mist
- Generally less expensive than ultrasonic nebulizers but are shown to be just as clinically effective at treating most respiratory conditions
- Have a tendency to be a little noisy
- Use high-frequency sound vibrations to turn a medication into a mist
- Silent and tend to deliver medication more quickly than jet nebulizers
- Aerosol particles are generally smaller and more uniform in size
- Generally more recommended for patients using a nebulizer system to treat cystic fibrosis
Few Things to Think About
1. Who is the nebulizer for?
If it’s for a child you should consider buying
equipment designed for kids with colorful or playful themes and these can be
referred as a “Pediatric Nebulizer” or “Nebulizer Machine for Kids” or “Kids Nebulizer” or “Pediatric Nebulizer Machine” or “Child Nebulizer” or “Kid
Nebulizer” or “Kids Nebulizers” or” Children Nebulizer” or “Nebulizer Pediatric”
or “Portable Nebulizer for Kids” or “Kids Nebulizer Machine”. If it’s for an
infant you may need to make sure you have an infant inhalation mask or other
necessary accessories.
2. Where will you use it?
Portability and battery packs are important if
you're frequently on-the-go.
3. Are you buying compatible nebulizer components?
Most manufacturers design nebulizer accessories
to be compatible only with their own products. Make sure you are buying the
correct parts. Most of the nebulizer tubing or nebulizer masks are compatible
with all the machines.
4. How often do nebulizer accessories need to
be renewed?
Most nebulizer products require regular
maintenance and cleaning. For accessories like nebulizer cups, mouthpieces,
tubing, or compressor air filters; there are recommended periods of use, after which the product may lose its effectiveness.
